Creating Community Landscapes to Promote Physical Activity
HCHN will work with Herkimer-Oneida Transportation Study to improve land use policies, building codes, roadway design standards, zoning regulations and other governmental changes that promote and facilitate physical activity in the Herkimer County communities.
HCHN will promote both Complete Streets and the development of Pedestrian Action Plans. Complete Streets is a belief that streets and roadways should be “designed and operated to enable safe access for all users. Pedestrians, bicyclists, motorists and transit riders of all ages and abilities must be able to safely move along and across a complete street. Complete Streets make it easy to cross the street, walk to shops, and bicycle to work. They allow buses to run on time and make it safe for people to walk to and from train stations.”
A Pedestrian Action Plan is designed to assist officials in identifying “where to begin to address pedestrian safety issues. It is also intended to assist agencies in further enhancing their existing pedestrian safety programs and activities, including identifying safety problems, analyzing information, and selecting optimal solutions.”
