HCHN staff working with its Obesity Ad Hoc Committee has developed a two-pronged approach to promoting Physical Activity and Good Nutrition in Herkimer County. HCHN has partnered with many local organizations in an effort to implement school-based interventions, community education programs and promote a better awareness of the effects obesity has not only on Herkimer County residents but the overall quality of life in Herkimer County.

Children:

International Food Information Council Foundation – A comprehensive and fun interactive site for kids. Helps kids learn about nutrition and exercise through games, etc.

PE Central - The online program that allows elementary-aged students to log their physical activity steps & miles online. They can also walk across the USA with their classmates along with other cool features. Teachers, registration directions are here or you can register your school now.

KidsRunning.Com - we are building a Web site devoted to promoting the sport of running for kids so that they can enjoy the benefits of a fit and healthy lifestyle both at school and home. We integrate academics when we can. It seems that both learning and running are more fun for kids when they are combined.

United States Department of Health and Human Services – Centers for Disease Control and Prevention - BAM! Body and Mind is an online destination for kids created by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), an agency of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. Designed for kids 9-13 years old, BAM! Body and Mind gives them the information they need to make healthy lifestyle choices. The site focuses on topics that kids told us are important to them — such as stress and physical fitness — using kid-friendly lingo, games, quizzes, and other interactive features.

Nemours Center for Children's Health Media - Welcome to KidsHealth! KidsHealth is the largest and most visited site on the Web providing doctor-approved health information about children from before birth through adolescence. Created by The Nemours Foundation's Center for Children's Health Media, the award-winning KidsHealth provides families with accurate, up-to-date, and jargon-free health information they can use. KidsHealth has been on the Web since 1995 - and has been accessed by over 100,000,000 visitors. KidsHealth has separate areas for kids, teens, and parents - each with its own design, age-appropriate content, and tone. There are literally thousands of in-depth features, articles, animations, games, and resources - all original and all developed by experts in the health of children and teens.

Food and Nutrition Information Center – National Agricultural Library/USDA - A compilation of resources about childhood obesity for educators and researchers. It is comprised primarily of articles from professional journals (published in 1997 or later), but includes some information available on the World Wide Web, as well as a small number of consumer educational materials.

North American Association For The Study Of Obesity (NAASO) - Is the leading scientific society dedicated to the study of obesity. Since 1982 NAASO has been committed to encouraging research on the causes and treatment of obesity, and to keeping the medical community and public informed of new advances.

The National Coordinating Committee on School Health & Safety:
The National Coordinating Committee on School Health & Safety site is designed to be a clearinghouse for web-based resources related to school health.  You will find links to each of the 64 member national organizations, six Federal agency sponsors, and over 360 web sites recommended by NCCSHS members.

Action For Healthy Kids:
The Action For Healthy Kids webpage offers resources to address the epidemic of overweight, undernourished and sedentary youth by focusing on changes at school.  The coalition works in all 50 states and the District of Columbia to improve children’s nutrition and increase physical activity, which will in turn improve their readiness to learn.

The USDA’s Team Nutrition:
