HealthNet Helps to Kick Off Frankfort Fitness Fanatics

Frankfort, NY – Mary Beth Germann, school nurse at the Frankfort-Schuyler Middle-Senior High School, has organized a group of students and teachers with the goal to get moving and make better food choices.  At their first meeting Tuesday February 27, Herkimer County HealthNet was there to help them get things started; by providing a speaker and 100 pedometers.

Herkimer County HealthNet’s Speakers Bureau arranged for Linda Robbins, Assistant Director of Cornell Cooperative Extension of Herkimer County, to speak to the group of 30 students and teachers about nutrition and healthy food choices.  The presentation stressed awareness of portion sizes, nutritional information and the importance of drinking water.

Adam Hutchinson of Herkimer County HealthNet was on hand to demonstrate the proper use of the pedometers.  Teachers and students have begun taking advantage of their free periods to increase their physical activity by walking the halls; each student and teacher has the goal of reaching 10,000 steps per day.  In the spring they hope to utilize the school’s track as a place to walk.

To increase the opportunities for Community Education in Herkimer County, Herkimer County HealthNet providers speakers on a wide variety of topics utilizing the expertise of volunteers from health and human service organizations throughout Herkimer County.  These volunteers are available to speak at community meetings or functions.  For a brochure, more information on topics or to book a speaker contact HCHN at 315-867-1552.
